How to write a cursive capital Z
- Start at the top line with a small curl and curve over and down, like the top of a large hump.
- As the stroke reaches the baseline, pinch inward and plunge below it into the descender space.
- Loop to the left, swing back up across the baseline, and finish with a tail to the right.
How to write a lowercase z in cursive
- From the baseline, draw an under-curve up to the midline.
- Curve over in a small hump — the start looks like an n.
- As the hump lands, pinch at the baseline and dive below it into the descender space.
- Loop to the left, come back up across the baseline, and finish with a tail.
Connecting z to other letters
The z is rare enough — zero, lazy, pizza — that its odd shape never gets enough practice; give it a deliberate session rather than waiting to meet it. Its loop belongs to the left-swinging family, so drill it alongside g, j and y and keep all four descenders the same depth. The double z in pizza and jazz is the fun drill.

Why does the cursive z go below the baseline?
The corners of a print z force three full stops. The cursive form replaces them with a hump and a descender loop — one continuous motion, which is the entire point of cursive.
Why does my cursive z look like a y?
The hump is missing. A y starts with an open valley; a z starts with an n-style hump before the dive. No hump, no z.
