Cursive U: Copy and Paste, How to Write It + Free Worksheet

The cursive u is two smooth valleys and nothing else, which makes it the easiest letter on this site — and the base stroke of i, w, and the ending of many joins. Copy the cursive u in every style below and lock in the under-curve.

How to write a cursive capital U

  1. From the top line, draw an under-curve down to the baseline and back up to the top line.
  2. Repeat: come down to the baseline again and curve back up.
  3. Finish the second upstroke with a tail. Capital U is simply the lowercase shape written at full height.

How to write a lowercase u in cursive

  1. From the baseline, draw an under-curve up to the midline.
  2. Come straight down to the baseline and curve back up to the midline — the first valley.
  3. Repeat the motion for the second valley.
  4. The final upstroke is your tail into the next letter.

Connecting u to other letters

Keep the two valleys identical in width and depth — uneven valleys are what make u read as ii or blur into w. Practise the un, up and ur joins, and the classic drill word until, which mixes u with i and t.

Cursive U questions

How is cursive u different from cursive w?

U has two valleys and exits from the baseline; w has the same valleys but ends with a small side dip at the midline, because w is a bridge letter that joins from the top.

Why does my cursive u look like ii?

The retrace is too straight and the valleys too narrow. Round the bottom of each valley and keep the two arches connected in one motion — and remember only i takes a dot.
