How to write a cursive capital P
- Make a tall downstroke from the top line to the baseline, starting with a small curl at the top.
- Lift, return to the top of the stem, and draw the bowl: curve out to the right and back in to touch the stem near the midline.
- In most styles the capital P does not join to the next letter — start the following lowercase letter separately.
How to write a lowercase p in cursive
- From the baseline, draw an under-curve up to the midline.
- Come straight down well below the baseline. In classic looped cursive this descender is retraced, not looped.
- Retrace back up through the baseline to the midline.
- Curve over to the right to form the bowl, close it at the baseline, and finish with a tail.
Connecting p to other letters
The p descender is the odd one out: g, j and y loop, but p (like t up top) retraces. Keep that retrace tight and vertical — a gap turns your p into a wobbly n with a tail. Drill pp in apple and happy.

Cursive P questions
Does the cursive p have a loop below the line?
In the classic school style, no — the descender goes straight down and retraces straight back up. Some modern casual hands do loop it, but the retraced form is the traditional one.
How deep should the p descender go?
About as far below the baseline as the bowl is tall above it — roughly the same depth as your g and j loops, so the word sits evenly.
