How to write a cursive capital Y
- From the top line, draw a rounded valley down to the baseline and back up to the top — like the first half of a capital U.
- From the top of the second stroke, plunge straight down past the baseline into the descender space.
- Loop to the left, swing back up across the baseline, and finish with a tail.
How to write a lowercase y in cursive
- From the baseline, draw an under-curve up to the midline.
- Come down to the baseline and curve back up to the midline — the first valley, exactly like a u.
- From the midline, drop straight down past the baseline into the descender space.
- Loop to the left, come back up across the baseline, and finish with a tail.
Connecting y to other letters
Y closes more English words than almost any letter — very, my, happy, day — so its loop is usually the last stroke of the word and the most visible. Keep it the same depth and width as your g and j loops, and drill the endings ly and ry.

Cursive Y questions
Which way does the cursive y loop go?
To the left, matching g and j. Only the q loops right.
What is the difference between cursive y and cursive g?
Same descender loop, different top: g starts with a closed oval, y starts with an open u-valley. If your y oval closes, it has become a g.
