How to draw bubble letters (the method)

Every bubble letter on this site follows the same four moves, whatever the letter:

  1. Skeleton. Lightly sketch the plain letter first — thin, ordinary, boring. This is your armature.
  2. Inflate. Draw a fat, rounded outline around the skeleton, keeping an even distance from it on every side, like the letter has been pumped full of air.
  3. Counters. Add the windows — the holes inside letters like A, B, O and R. In bubble style the holes shrink and their corners round off.
  4. Clean and shine. Erase the skeleton, thicken the outline, and add a small highlight circle near the top left of each letter — the balloon shine that sells the whole style.

From there the variations are endless: double-outline the letters for a sticker look, add a drop shadow low-right for depth, or overlap the letters and erase the hidden lines for the classic graffiti throw-up feel.

Bubble letter questions

Are these bubble letters a font I can install?

The copy-paste characters are Unicode — no installation needed, they work anywhere text does. For drawing, bubble lettering is a hand style, and the four-step method above is faster to learn than any font is to install.

Which bubble letter should I draw first?

O, then I, then L. The O teaches the ring and the highlight, the I teaches the capsule, and the L teaches the corner blend — those three moves cover most of the alphabet.

Can I use the printables for a classroom banner?

Yes — print, color and cut. Every sheet is free for personal and classroom use, and the letters are sized to be readable across a room.
