How to write a cursive capital D

  1. Make a tall downstroke from the top line to the baseline, ending in a small loop at the bottom left.
  2. From the top, sweep a large bowl out to the right and down to the baseline.
  3. Close the bowl into the bottom loop and finish with a tail running right along the baseline.

How to write a lowercase d in cursive

  1. Start like an a: curve up to the midline, swing a counter-clockwise oval to the baseline and close it.
  2. Without lifting, continue up into a tall stem — to about three-quarter height, the same height as a t.
  3. Retrace straight back down the stem to the baseline. In the classic looped hand there is no loop here.
  4. Finish with an upward tail to the right.

Connecting d to other letters

The d shares its no-loop retrace with t, so practise them together: the drill word dot uses both. Keep the stem tight against the oval — a gap between them makes the d read as cl, one of the most common beginner errors.

Cursive D questions

Does the cursive d have a loop?

In the traditional school style, no — the stem is retraced like a t. Some fast personal hands loop it, but the retraced form is the one taught.

Why does my cursive d look like cl?

The stem has drifted away from the oval. The retrace must run right against the oval’s right side, in one continuous motion.
