How to write a cursive capital O
- Start near the top line and sweep a large counter-clockwise oval down to the baseline and back up.
- Close the oval at the top with a small inward loop.
- Exit with a short bridge stroke to the right at the top of the letter.
How to write a lowercase o in cursive
- Start just below the midline and curve up to touch it.
- Draw a counter-clockwise oval down to the baseline and back up, closing it at the top.
- Finish with a small bridge stroke at the midline pointing right. The o hands over to the next letter from the top, not the baseline.
Connecting o to other letters
O is one of the four bridge letters — o, w, v and b — that connect from the midline. That changes the shape of whatever follows: in on, the n loses its usual entry stroke and hangs from the bridge. Practise on, of, or and ol until the handover feels smooth.

Cursive O questions
Why does cursive o connect from the top?
Because the letter closes at the midline, the pen is already at the top when the letter ends. Dropping to the baseline and back up would add a stroke, so cursive keeps the join high.
How do I keep my cursive o from looking like an a?
Close the oval and keep the bridge horizontal. If the bridge dips to the baseline before joining, the closed oval plus low join reads as an a.
