Cursive R: Copy and Paste, How to Write It + Free Worksheet
Ask any teacher: the cursive r is the hardest lowercase letter in the alphabet. Its little shoulder is unlike any other stroke, and every hand wobbles on it at first. Copy the cursive r in every style below, then learn the shoulder slowly — it is the last letter most people master.

How to write a cursive capital R
- Make a tall downstroke from the top line to the baseline, starting with a small curl.
- From the top of the stem, curve out and back in to touch the stem near the midline, forming the bowl.
- From the touch point, kick a leg out and down to the baseline and finish with a tail.
How to write a lowercase r in cursive
- From the baseline, draw an under-curve up to the midline.
- At the top, make a tiny tick up and to the right — just past the midline.
- Step slightly down into a short, flat shoulder that leans right.
- From the shoulder, drop to the baseline and finish with a tail.
Connecting r to other letters
The r changes costume depending on what precedes it: after a baseline letter it rises normally, but after a bridge letter — or, br, wr — it hangs from the midline and the shoulder flattens further. Drill er and re first: they are the two most common letter pairs in the entire English language, so your r gets more use than almost any stroke you own.

Cursive R questions
Why is the cursive r so hard?
Its shoulder is the only stroke of its kind — nothing else in the alphabet rehearses it. Every other letter shares strokes with neighbours; the r you must learn on its own.
What does a proper cursive r shoulder look like?
A small tick up past the midline, then a short flat step to the right before dropping. If you skip the step, the letter collapses into an under-curve and reads as part of a u or an i without a dot.
