How to write a cursive capital M

  1. Start at the top line with a small curl and come down to the baseline — the first tall stroke.
  2. Retrace up and curve over in a big hump back down to the baseline.
  3. Repeat for a second hump, slightly shorter if you like, and finish with a tail to the right.

How to write a lowercase m in cursive

  1. From the baseline, draw an under-curve up to the midline.
  2. Curve over and down to the baseline — that entry arch is hump one.
  3. Retrace up and over for hump two, down to the baseline.
  4. Retrace up and over for hump three, come down, and finish with a tail. Three humps, always.

Connecting m to other letters

The rule that keeps m and n straight: cursive n has two humps and cursive m has three — one more than their print versions, because the entry stroke counts. Keep all humps equal in width and height, and drill mm in summer and common.

Cursive M questions

Why does cursive m have three humps?

The connecting entry stroke rises and arches over before the two “main” humps, so the finished letter shows three arches. A two-hump cursive m reads as an n.

How do I keep cursive m and n apart?

Count on paper: n = two humps, m = three. It feels wrong for a week because print m has two — then it becomes automatic.
