How to write a cursive capital A
- Start a little below the top line and curve up and to the left, then sweep down in a large slanted oval that touches the baseline.
- Curve along the baseline and swing back up to your starting height, closing the big oval.
- Retrace a straight downstroke close along the right side of the oval, back down to the baseline.
- Finish with a small upward tail to the right. That tail is the joining stroke.
How to write a lowercase a in cursive
- Start just below the midline and curve up to touch it.
- Swing left and down in a counter-clockwise oval that sits on the baseline, and close the oval where you started.
- Without lifting your pen, retrace straight down the right side of the oval to the baseline.
- Finish with a small upward tail to the right, ready to join the next letter.
Connecting a to other letters
The lowercase a joins from its baseline tail, so pairs like an, at and ar feel natural. Watch what comes before it: after a bridge letter like o, w, v or b, the join drops into the a from the midline instead of rising from the baseline, which slightly flattens the top of the oval.

Cursive A questions
What does a cursive a look like?
Lowercase cursive a is a closed oval with a short retraced stem on its right side and a small exit tail. Capital A is the same shape scaled up: a large oval plus a close downstroke. If your oval stays open at the top, it starts to read as a u, so always close it.
Is the cursive a the same as an italic a?
No. Italic a is simply a slanted print letter. Cursive a is written in one continuous motion with an entry curve and an exit tail so it can connect to its neighbours.
