How to write a cursive capital S
- From the baseline, sweep a long upstroke to the top line and curl over to the left in a loop.
- Come down in a deep curve that swings left of your upstroke, all the way to the baseline.
- Make a small loop or curl at the baseline and finish with a tail running right — like a swan settling.
How to write a lowercase s in cursive
- From the baseline, draw an under-curve up to the midline — the same entry as an i or u.
- At the top, curve over to the left and swoop back down toward the baseline.
- Close the shape against your upstroke at the baseline — the little sail must be shut.
- Finish with a tail to the right.
Connecting s to other letters
An open sail is the classic s failure: if the downstroke does not close against the upstroke, the letter reads as a stray r or a broken i. And because s is one of the most frequent letters in English, drill it inside the joins st, sh and ss — words like street, she and class — until the closure is automatic.

Why does the cursive s look nothing like a print s?
Because a print s needs two direction changes, which is slow. The cursive form replaces them with one up-curve and one closing swoop — a completely different construction built for speed, inherited from old business handwriting.
How do I know if my cursive s is right?
Check the closure: the sail must be a closed shape sitting on the baseline, with the tail leaving from the closure point. Open sail = wrong letter.
