How to quote in Discord
- Single line: start it with
>and a space — that line gets the quote bar. - Everything after: start with
>>>and a space — the rest of the message stays quoted, line breaks included. - Or skip typing: hover a message → Reply, which quotes with attribution.
Line breaks without sending
The other half of message layout: Shift+Enter makes a new line without sending (mobile: the return key just works — sending is the separate button). For a visual blank line inside one message, press Shift+Enter twice. There is no true “empty message”; if you need a spacer line, a single quoted space > or an invisible-style character does the trick.
Quote questions
How do I stop a >>> quote mid-message?
You can’t — triple-quote captures everything to the end of the message by design. Use single > per line when you need mixed quoted and normal lines.
Why did my > not make a quote?
The space after > is required, and it must start the line. Mid-line arrows stay literal — which is why quoting code with > inside works fine.
